Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Apprenticeships/Traineeships

A traineeship or apprenticeship is a contract between an employer and a trainee or apprentice, whereby the employer undertakes to train and employ the trainee or apprentice in a nationally recognised vocation or trade.

The trainee or apprentice also undertakes structured learning and paid employment for a specific period of time to achieve a relevant qualification.

A traineeship usually lasts for twelve months to three years, depending on the industry of employment undertaken. An apprenticeship is in a traditional trade occupation and usually lasts for three or four years.

A traineeship or apprenticeship may be full-time, part-time or school based but this depends on the industrial award or agreement being utilised by the employer.
